NEWENT Town’s FA Vase adventure came to an end as they suffered a 5-0 defeat away to AFC Aldermaston in the second qualifying round on Saturday.

The Daffs had reached the tie following a dramatic victory over Almondsbury at Wildsmith Meadow in the previous round, coming from 3-1 down to draw 3-3 before goalkeeper Adam Clark helped them secure a 4-2 victory on penalties.

But there was to be no repeat against Wessex League Division One outfit Aldermaston, who took the lead after 13 minutes through Anthony Bossman.

Newent prevented the hosts from adding to their advantage before the interval and went into half-time still firmly in the contest at just 1-0 down.

However, their hopes suffered a major blow almost immediately after the restart when Bossman struck again in the 46th minute to double Aldermaston’s advantage.

Samir Baral added a third just four minutes later as the hosts quickly took control of the second qualifying round contest.

Newent, captained by Tyler Weir, attempted to find a route back into the game, but Padraig Gorman made it 4-0 after 65 minutes.

The visitors’ afternoon became even more difficult when Josh Comerford was shown a red card with 15 minutes remaining, leaving the Daffs to complete the cup tie with ten men.

Aldermaston took advantage of their numerical superiority when Tsakani Chauke completed the scoring in the 85th minute.

The result brought Newent’s FA Vase campaign to an end after their memorable first qualifying round comeback and denied the Daffs a place in the first round proper.

It also brought a disappointing afternoon on the road to a close after Newent had remained within one goal of their hosts throughout the opening half.

Attention will now return to their Hellenic League Division One campaign, with Newent due to welcome Bromyard Town to Wildsmith Meadow on Saturday as they look for an immediate response.
