CINDERFORD endured a difficult first away trip of the National League Two West season as they were beaten 47-0 by an impressive Luctonians side at Mortimer Park.

The Foresters headed on the road looking to build on their opening-day 48-31 defeat against Clifton, but found themselves up against a powerful home side who took control during the first half.

Luctonians opened the scoring after nine minutes when Bryn Goodall crossed to give the hosts a 5-0 advantage.

The home side were later reduced to 14 men when John Kelly was shown a yellow card, offering Cinderford an opportunity to respond.

However, it was Luctonians who struck next as Owien Harriott-Davis crossed for their second try, with Goodall adding the conversion to make it 12-0.

Cinderford continued searching for a foothold but a damaging final ten minutes of the opening half put the hosts firmly in control.

James Mear scored Luctonians' third try on 30 minutes before Goodall converted, while Ben Link went over just four minutes later as the lead grew to 26-0.

Link grabbed his second try on the stroke of half-time and another successful conversion sent Cinderford into the break trailing 33-0.

Any hopes of an immediate response after the restart were quickly dashed when Goodall added a try to his earlier contributions with the boot.

His conversion stretched Luctonians' advantage to 40-0.

Despite the scoreline, Cinderford continued working for opportunities and enjoyed periods with the ball during the second half.

However, their promising attacking sets repeatedly broke down before they could establish the sustained pressure required to trouble a well-organised Luctonians defence.

The hosts completed the scoring after 72 minutes when Harriott-Davis crossed for his second try of the afternoon, with the conversion making it 47-0.

The result leaves Cinderford looking for their first victory following a challenging opening two matches of the new campaign.

Director of Rugby Clive Stuart-Smith admitted his side had struggled to contain the hosts' physical approach.

He said: “A very tough day all round, with and without the ball.

“Luctonians delivered a very professional, physical performance and stuck to what they excel at.

“We couldn’t find any answers to their front line attack and struggled to stop their momentum.

“While we did have multiple opportunities throughout the game, we couldn’t build any sustained pressure, with most of our attacking sets ending in enforced errors.

“As we move into the next block of games, we will have to improve key areas significantly.”

Cinderford will now look to regroup after two demanding fixtures at the start of their National League Two West campaign, having conceded 95 points across their opening matches.

They will be keen to rediscover the attacking threat shown against Clifton, when five tries brought a bonus point despite defeat. With the season in its early stages, attention turns towards producing a response in their next league outing.

The club also thanked the travelling supporters who made the journey to Mortimer Park and continued to back the team throughout a difficult afternoon.
