ALLAN Gough, the Cinderford Town co-manager, called his side’s 3-2 win over Merthyr Town the most dramatic game he’d seen in a long time.

And the 303-strong crowd at the Causeway on Bank Holiday Monday would most likely agree.

The Foresters found themselves squandering a lead for the third time in as many days – they led twice against Basingstoke Town on Saturday before losing 3-2 at home – but displayed the kind of resilience they will need if Southern League safety is to be achieved in their Premier Division debut season.

Gethyn Hill was sent off after scoring twice following a stunning 90th minute winner from substitute Ben Hands, while Merthyr’s Kevin Reffell should have been sent off after headbutting and grabbing Sam Hunt by the throat.

But it was a deserved win in following a gutsy performance from the hosts.

“It was a fantastic effort from the lads,” Gough said.

“We’re a side that lacks a bit of skill but if we go with that determination it makes us a better side. We have to compete and get ourselves back behind the ball which we did today.

“It was a bit sad having Gethyn sent off. He’s kicked the ball away in excitement and it’s just passion, and that’s all he got sent off for.

“But we played well today and we worked hard.

“Ben Hands came on and what a substitution that was near the end! He scores that goal from 30 yards in the top corner. It was unbelievable.

“Ben’s a lovely lad, and he deserves everything. I left him out today and felt a bit sorry for him but we had to go with the side we thought would win it.

“It was a dramatic finish – I was concerned with losing the lead because when there was five minutes left over and referees have stitched us up here lately.

“I’m very pleased with the performance from everyone and to beat a side who pay that sort of money compared to what we can is excellent.

“Those three points mean a heck of a lot to me. I was looking on the television and the Southern League table seemed to stay on there for ages with us at the bottom with ten points.

“But I shall have a look on Sky Sports News tonight and enjoy watching it!”
