SUPPORTERS helping their clubs financially seems all the rage currently - whether it’s taking over from a maligned owner or funding a new ground.

And Cinderford Town’s fans are no exception - having put together a pot of £500 to sign former Causeway frontman Lee Smith.

Smith arrived back in the Dean last week and after Town’s training session on Tuesday. The forward, who has previously played for Gloucester City, Worcester City and Hungerford, signs from Evesham United.

Smith has a proven goal-scoring pedigree, having once scored 21 goals from midfield in the old Conference North - now the National League North - and left Town at the end of the 2012/13 season for Cirencester Town.

He had a habit of scoring against his former side, first for Cirencester just months after leaving and again last season for Evesham in the 2-2 draw at The Causeway last year.

“He is a dynamic player,” said Ken Phelps, who helped to organise the financial aspect of the transfer in conjunction with David Knight, the club’s Supporters’ Trust chairman and manager John Brough

“There’s no doubt about it, he is a journeyman, but he looked sharp in training last week and he’s a proven goalscorer."
