LYDNEY captain Ed Jones is confident his side will not finish in their current lowly position come the end of the West of England League season – as long as the bad weather holds off long enough for them to finish a game.

Jones’ team are propping up the rest of the Gloucestershire Division, having won one game so far this summer, but believes Lydney have the quality to stay up.

But Lydney have been unable to string results together, in part due to three cancelled fixtures and an abandonment at Tewkesbury.

“We have had to adjust our target a little,” said Jones, who hoped to go one better than last year and win the division.

“But we have to take every game as it comes. As soon as we get a win I’m sure it’ll make a difference.

“The bowling and fielding have been good but the batting hasn’t been the best. We’re playing poor shots and no one’s been able to get into any kind of form.

“The weather has not been kind to us. We’ve been playing on wet wickets which is always hard and you go to practise and it’s raining and it’s even harder then.

“We will come good though. We’ve got the talent to stay up but it’s not all doom and gloom. If we get a couple of wins, that’s 40 points and it’s all much closer again but we do need a win.

“It’s been a huge pain with the weather. We played all our games last year and that showed with the results we had and we finished near the top.

“We just need to find some consistency with the batting. The league is more or less the same – the two teams that went down were the weaker ones last year – and so I’m sure we’ll be good enough.”
