IN a week where all eyes were on the record-breaking feats at Trent Bridge as England retained the ashes, Lydney’s own history boys were etching their names into the club’s record books.
It was a monumental day at Swan Road as Lydney openers Dean Pengelly and Jonny Kear put in a stunning display of batting, scoring 297 runs between in the ten-wicket win over Painswick.
They surpassed the previous record of 254 for an opening partnership - set by ex-England man and Lydney legend Steve James and partner Adrian Jones in August 1991.
The pair soon found out and sent their congratulations to Kear and Pengelly, who put on a batting clinic as they quickly went about chasing down the target of 295.
“They were scoring freely with superb strokeplay, timing and class,” said Phil Lewis.
“Their 100 partnership came up in quick time in the 17th over and both batsmen looked in the zone and batting with consumate ease.
“Those that watched reported it as a quite simply stunning spectacle, watching two high quality batsmen both at the peak of their form.
“Steve James and Adrian Jones soon found out and they sent their congratulations. What a performance.
“You have to feel sorry for Wayne Whitson who spent 42 overs padded up at number three!”
Jonny Kear finished with 160 not out and South African Pengelly hit 110 not out.
The pair were winning the online vote for Cricket World’s performance of the week when The Forester went to press.
