THE Lydney under-16s A tennis team narrowly lost an exciting, high quality match at home to Painswick.

Lydney number one Jason Wong, 14, took his match 0-6, 7-6, 10-7 following a tense tie-breaker.

Although Painswick's players were higher ranked, it was 2-2 after the singles.

The scores were still level after the doubles, which meant a tie-break shoot-out. The visitors narrowly won this by 10-7.

Lydney followed up this encounter with another exciting match at the Oxstalls Tennis Centre.

Again, Oxstalls players were ranked higher, but Lydney triumphed 8-4.

Lydney has three teams in the Gloucestershire League this season.

Junior membership is healthy and standards are high.

Club chairman Martin Godwin said: "In my 30+ years at the club I've never seen juniors hit the ball so hard and with such accuracy."

* LYDNEY Tennis Club was used to host the Forest schools' Road to Wimbledon competition, organised by Mark Thomson of Whitecross School.

Whitecross, Wyedean, Dene Magna and Newent were represented, with Beth Wilson of Whitecross beating Laura Chimes of Wyedean in the girls' final.

In the boys' competition, Zander Tremain of Newent beat George Conridge of Wyedean.
