The school summer holidays are now underway, and I know many families across the Forest of Dean will be making the most of the chance to spend some quality time together. Whether it's a day out with the children, a trip to a local attraction or simply enjoying a meal together, these moments matter. But I also know that the cost of the summer holidays can put a real strain on family finances.

That's why I'm pleased to see the launch of the Government's Great British Summer Savings scheme, helping families enjoy more this summer while supporting the local businesses that are so important to our communities.

Throughout the holidays, VAT has been reduced on a range of children's activities, family attractions and kids' meals. That means cheaper visits to places like soft play centres, museums, zoos, adventure parks and cinemas, as well as savings when eating out with the family. On top of that, children aged between 5 and 15 can travel free on local bus services throughout August, making it easier and more affordable to get out and about.

Here in the Forest of Dean, more than 10,900 children are set to benefit from free bus travel, while over 9,500 local families could benefit from lower prices at eligible attractions. At a time when many households are still watching every penny, these savings can help you enjoy the summer without quite so much financial pressure.

This is also a real opportunity for our local businesses. Summer is a crucial season for many attractions, cafés, restaurants and leisure venues, and bringing more visitors through the door benefits everyone. I'd encourage businesses across the Forest to check whether they're eligible to take part in the scheme. By getting involved and passing on the VAT savings to customers, businesses can help local families while also attracting more visitors during the busy holiday period.

We're also capping the number of branded school uniform items that schools can require, helping to bring down the cost of getting children ready for the new school year. Together, these measures are designed to put more money back into people's pockets and make everyday life that little bit easier.
