Smiths are putting the final preparations together for their 1st and 2nd October antiques and collectables auction, with the fully illustrated catalogue due to go online on Thursday, September 24.
A total of 1250 lots will be going under the hammer across the two-day sale with a pretty even split of 600 lots on day one and 650 lots on day two.
Day one will have ceramics, glass, silver, gold, jewellery and watches with quality items across all sections. The specialist sections in this sale are Silver, Gold & Jewellery and the selection on offer is particularly impressive.
Amongst the highlights is a magnificent large silver punch bowl, beautifully decorated with horses around the rim, estimated at £4,500-£5,500 it could be the star of the silver section. Smiths are also hoping that the Toi et Moi diamond ring estimated at £6,000-£8,000 will perform well despite the diamond market going through a bit of a transitional period.
The Toi et Moi ring features two beautiful diamonds so Smiths are confident it will be popular with both private buyers and dealers. If diamond jewellery isn’t for you then Smiths have plenty of other beautiful jewellery going under the hammer including a five stone aquamarine ring, a necklace set with a large carved tourmaline, a range of opal jewellery, and much, much more.
The ceramics in day one should also prove popular, with a good variety of items on offer. A Chinese ‘fish bowl’ jardiniere estimated at £100-£150 should attract plenty of interest with its vibrant colours and good size. Some ceramics also fall under the collectables umbrella with a ceramic Bulldog advertising Guinness that has a £300-£500 estimate hopefully appealing to collectors of the popular drinks brand.
Day two will include books, collectables, pictures and furniture with again a wide range of interesting items going under the hammer. A first edition Of Mice and Men book by John Steinbeck has a £280-£350 estimate. The complete works of Jane Austen is in for £60-£80 and is always a popular choice with buyers.
The collectables section is as varied as you’d expect with everything from vintage pens, an old post office sign, as well as a selection of bronzes. One bronze consigned is ‘Needless Alarm’ by Frederick Lord Leighton with an estimate of £8,000-£10,000.
The team at Smiths are looking forward to opening the doors for viewing on Tuesday 29th and Wednesday 30th September. It’s a great opportunity for potential buyers to come along, take a closer look and discover the fantastic selection of antiques and collectables on offer.
Viewing is also a popular time for sellers to visit the saleroom, to see how everything is presented and find out where their items are displayed ahead of the auction.
Online photographs and descriptions can provide a useful overview, but there’s nothing quite like seeing an item for yourself and taking the time to examine its condition, quality and any signs of wear or restoration.
