DUBIOUS NARRATIVES....

The bedrock of democracy is access to accurate information - the basis for informed debate.

Outside the BBC in Manchester a statue of George Orwell carries his quotation: "If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear".

The media spin in the UK is that Ukraine is ‘winning’ with dramatic drone attacks on Russian oil stores and shopping centres. Then they get rid of the General who is supposed to have delivered this victory. Does a successful team sack its manager?

Those who watch the detailed reports about Ukraine know that it has had some impact in attacking Russian targets, but it has taken considerably more damage than it has inflicted. Why is this not reported?

Iran is condemned as a brutal repressive regime hated by its people. At the same time huge demonstrations supporting it are dismissed. How can this be?

Britain rightly projected its image as a civilising force wanting to champion human rights. Why has it been muted about Gaza? Could it have anything to do with Israel being a ‘close ally’? Why are there so few reports of this in the mainstream media?

Remember, he who pays the piper calls the tune. Most of the UK mainstream media commentators are unbalanced, but ex-military officers Michael Clarke and Sean Bell on Sky are informed, though largely supportive of Government policy.

If you have a VPN you will be able to watch Russia Today in the UK which gives the Russian version of events – but it could be a crime to circulate its views. In turn, Russia bans the BBC – but you can get it in Russia, if you have a VPN.

All sources need to be taken with a pinch of salt BUT you won’t get an accurate report of events from mainstream British or Russian media alone. They all follow an editorial line. As the narrative becomes more detached from reality in the UK expect more censorship and prosecutions of those who attempt to reveal the truth.

You should be concerned. Accurate and objective information is the bedrock of democracy. Censorship and spin are strangling it.
