Letter to the Editor: On behalf of The Friends of Bathurst Pool I would like to comment on the recent adverse posts on social media regarding the closure of the pool at the end of season.

The dates of opening and closing are fixed at our AGM which takes place early in the year and these dates are adhered to irrespective of weather conditions.

This is down to stock in the shop, chemicals and more important the availability of lifeguards many of whom are returning to college or preparing for university at the beginning of September.

All trustees work tirelessly and voluntarily because they are passionate about the running of and the future of the pool.

Bob Berryman, the manager works every day, bar any medical appointments, and this totals approximately 50 hours per week and he is totally supported by all other trustees.

Our rules state that there must be two trustees on site at all times.

This equates to 140 hours per week and although many of them are in full-time or part-time work they willingly donate many of their free hours but we are all ready for a break when end of season comes.

So all those who are complaining about the unfortunate date of closure should come forward to volunteer when they may become aware of the work involved.

Five hours in the shop on a busy day and we probably would not see them again.

On saying all this I would like to add that the support of all of our regular swimmers far outweighs the negativity of the ones that complain.

They donate generously, keep us in cakes and biscuits  and thank us on a daily basis for all our work.

We look forward to seeing you all next season.

Sheila Berryman, Trustee, The Friends of Bathurst Pool
