OFFICERS from the Forest South Neighbourhood Policing Team seized two vehicles during patrols in Lydney on Thursday, June 19, as part of ongoing efforts to tackle abandoned and untaxed cars in the Forest of Dean.

The patrol led to the discovery of a red Ford in a state of disrepair. The vehicle, which had been reported as abandoned, was found with smashed windows, bald tyres, and a missing wing mirror.

Police said they made efforts to trace the registered owner, but when no one came forward, the car was seized under powers granted by Operation GIG.

Operation GIG is a policing initiative that allows officers to remove vehicles which appear to be abandoned and are at increased risk of becoming hotspots for anti-social behaviour or criminal activity.

These include vehicles likely to be vandalised further, used for fly-tipping, or targeted by arson.

A police spokesperson said: “Operation GIG allows us to take proactive steps where vehicles have been left in a condition that poses a risk to the local community or environment. Removing these vehicles can help prevent further damage and disruption.”

Later in the day, officers came across a second vehicle, a silver car, which was parked on a public road but flagged as SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) on the DVLA database.

Under current regulations, a vehicle that has been declared SORN must be kept off the public highway, typically on private land or in a garage.

As the silver car was found on the road, it was seized for being improperly taxed. Police say the owner will now be liable for any unpaid tax, as well as new tax payments if they wish to reclaim the vehicle.

The Neighbourhood Policing Team is reminding motorists of their responsibilities when it comes to vehicle tax and roadworthiness.
