BUS campaigner Sue Dubois claims cuts in Government transport subsidies are wrecking the area’s travel network – especially in Newent.

She says the latest Stagecoach bus timetables, mostly coming into effect this week, show an increased shrinkage in service.

Sue heads the BetterBuses4ForestofDean group which has been campaigning for improved bus services in the area, as part of the national Campaign for Better Transport.

“Stagecoach has done what it can to keep services running but they are a commercial company and without subsidies some of these routes are just not viable,” she said.

“The government is wrecking our bus transport system. All routes to Hereford via Newent are changing, with many being withdrawn.”

Sue points out that there are very few buses running back from Gloucester after 7pm and added that people are finding it almost impossible to keep changing their work hours or to travel out of the Forest for employment, medical appointments or education.

She concluded: “It is time for the Forest elected district councillors and Cabinet to have urgent dialogue with the county council as it is the County that make our decisions on all Transport budgets.”
