A 39-year-old Ruardean man who assaulted two police constables has been given a suspended prison sentence and ordered to pay £200 compensation to each of the officers.

Gareth Powell of West End, pleaded guilty at Cheltenham Magistrates’ Court to assaulting PCs Ben Humphries and Jack Hirst by beating them during the exercise of their functions at Lydney on December 4  last year.

He also admitted being in possession of cocaine on that date.

The magistrates sentenced him to 16 weeks’ jail, suspended for a year, and ordered him to do 100 hours of unpaid work. He was also ordered to pay costs and surcharges of £207.
