IN 2008 Sling United folded because of a lack of players.
Now they're back with a vengeance, with more than enough players for two sides in the North Gloucestershire League.
Club secretary Kevin Nash said: "In truth, we took a year off rather than folding.
"For some reason we just couldn't field a team and had to pull out.
"We came back last season with a team of young boys, mostly 17 and 18, and won promotion.
"We started up another team of even younger players this season and although they're struggling on the pitch, they're learning."
Sling United's recent history is full of peaks and troughs.
The club reformed in 1994 after a 25 year absence – rising up the leagues to play in the North Gloucestershire Premier.
They also helped produced some outstanding young talents such as Jamie Powell, who is now playing regularly for Cinderford Town in the Southern League.
They initially played at the Lydney Recreation Ground, before applying to build a ground in nearby Ellwood, using land adjoining to Ellwood County Primary School.
However, villagers objected to that idea and presented a petition to the Forest of Dean District Council.
Eventually, the club agreed to lease their current Scarr Bandstand Ground from the Forestry Commission, using changing facilities and showers at nearby Sling Club.
Kevin added: "Most of our players still come from the village.
"Rather than having managers, we've got four lads who run both sides, Paul, Ashley and Mark Thomas, and Joey Jones."
