SAINSBURY'S want to open a new store with village green and town square in Lydney.

The supermarket giant has joined forces with Robert Hitchins Ltd on a planning application to build a new store and neighbourhood centre near the bypass.

The new centre would serve those living in thousands of new homes planned for the outskirts of town by developers Hitchins and MMC.

Sainsbury?s claim it will create up to 180 full and part-time local

jobs and attract further employment.

As well a store, there would be 400 parking spaces, café, petrol station, cash points and recycling bank.

The neighbourhood centre includes retail units, a market square, a village green, pedestrian and cycle links from Lydney.

People can find out more by attending an exhibition at the The Annexe Inn, Newerne Street,

on Friday July 6 between 11am- 7pm and Saturday 7 July between

10am- 2pm.

Crump Farm, a listed building on

the site, would continue being used as a residential

dwelling.

Ben Littman, Sainsbury's regional development executive, said:

"People in Lydney deserve a wider choice for their weekly shop

without having to travel long distances from home."

Hitchins land and planning director Andrew Hill said: "The housing development and

neighbourhood centre has already been approved in principle and

we believe that the detailed proposals for the neighbourhood

centre, market square and Sainsbury?s store can work well

together and should bring considerable benefits to the local

community."
