THE OUTDOOR areas at Ruspidge Memorial Hall have undergone an inspiring transformation, blossoming into a thriving community and wildlife garden that is enhancing local biodiversity while fostering stronger connections among residents.

This fantastic project has been made possible thanks to funding from a community grant alongside generous support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

What was once an underused patch of land is now a vibrant green space featuring dedicated vegetable growing areas where residents can cultivate fresh produce such as carrots and tomatoes.

Compost bins have been installed to efficiently manage organic waste generated by the hall’s various user groups, helping reduce rubbish and create valuable nutrient-rich soil.

A highlight of the garden is a newly installed wormery, donated by Forest of Dean District Council.

By harnessing the power of worms to break down organic matter, the garden now benefits from an environmentally friendly way to nurture plants and flowers.

But the garden is about much more than growing plants. It has become a social and educational hub for the community.

Throughout the summer months, weekly evening gardening sessions give residents the chance to come together outdoors, share gardening tips, and enjoy the fresh air.

These gatherings have been praised for their warm, welcoming atmosphere, helping neighbours build friendships and work together for a common cause.

Looking ahead, organisers have plans to expand the garden’s role in the community by introducing a variety of creative and social activities suitable for all ages.

As part of Gloucestershire Biodiversity Week, the garden recently hosted a well-attended event titled ‘Composting in the Community.’

Expert speakers offered practical advice on sustainable gardening and effective composting techniques, helping attendees understand how to reduce waste and care for the environment in their own gardens.

This community-led garden project demonstrates how thoughtful use of outdoor spaces can create environmental benefits.
