MAJESTIC moggie Sugar 'n' Spice is at the centre of the latest Olympic scandal – but the cat fight has nothing to do with doping.

The Forest feline hoped to be crowned the UK's first Olympian Gold pet cat in time for the opening of the Games on Saturday.

But after months of going for gold her owner Marlene Howes was told that some of the qualifying heats didn't count towards the new top title.

Now Marlene is challenging the cat authorities' decision to knock her rescue pet off the top spot on the medals podium.

As far as she is concerned Sugar 'n' Spice should take the British title for household cats after winning her fifth gold medal at the Kensington Cat Club Show on Saturday.

"We were told is that we would need five bronzes, five, silvers and five golds by different judges," said Marlene.

"She should have been the first British Olympian cat when she collected her fifth gold on Saturday, but they say the breed club shows can't be counted towards it.

"They told me a few weeks ago but by then it was too late to do anything about it.

"I'm very sad and annoyed – she's a lovely cat who has won 17 best in shows."

Whitecroft woman Marlene has been breeding Persians for 50 years, but has joined the craze for showing non pedigree moggies.

But the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy, the GCCF, deny it toughened up the rules without telling competitors.

A GCCF spokesman said: "Competitors must take responsibility for keeping up to date.

"This is the absolute highest title so cats who win it must have faced the stiffest competition, that is why we are so stringent."
