Northern Senior League Division One

Broadwell 2

Lydbrook Athletic 0

EXPERIENCE just about won the day in this derby at The Hawthorns, but Lydbrook provided stubborn opposition.

Craig Broadman and Simon Holland played well in the Lydbrook defence against the lively Broadwell attack of Steve Belfitt and Danny Latham.

Lydbrook had three good scoring chances during the first half, with Broadwell keeper Lee Harris making one particularly good save with his feet.

Steve Belfitt set up Broadwell's opening goal with an attacking run down the right flank.

Craig Lewis saw his first time shot saved by Craig Edwards, but ex-Lydbrook midfielder Jamie Powell knocked in the rebound.

Both sides struggled to find any fluency in the final third, but Lydbrook tired as the game wore on – allowing Belfitt and Latham more space.

Jamie Powell made the game safe with his and Broadwell's second goal. He ran onto a Ross Scott pass, rounded keeper Edwards and drilled home from an acute angle. Latham won a penalty late in the game, but Craig Edwards pulled off a tremendous one handed save to deny Guy Jones.

This was hardly a classic, but the league leaders were happy with three more points.

The pitch was also a credit to groundsman Paul Ennis, following heavy rain through Friday night.

This week, Broadwell travel to Star FC in Cheltenham, a ground where they have struggled for success in recent seasons.
