SHOPPERS from across the Forest of Dean have helped celebrate the district’s independent businesses after Forest of Dean District Council announced the winners of its Shop Local competition.

The initiative invited residents to share their experiences of shopping locally and highlight the benefits of supporting independent traders on high streets and in community hubs across the district.

Dozens of entries were received, with many praising the personal service, sense of community and quality of goods offered by local shops.

One entrant described how shopping locally offered something online retailers simply cannot, saying: “Today I had lovely conversations with business owners, crafters and makers, it was absolutely lovely and something you'll never get from clicking a link on a screen.”

Others focused on the quality and affordability available on local high streets. Speaking about The Choice is Yours in Coleford, one shopper said: “Such wonderful fresh fruit and veg that is unique with reasonable, affordable prices. It’s so vitally important to shop local as the money goes to support the local economy and families that work here.”

Independent gift shops also featured strongly in the competition. Celestial Adornment, located on Coleford High Street, was described as “a gem of a shop” with a wide range of items, adding that there was “sure to be something for that special gift or a treat for yourself”.

Forest of Dean District Council said the competition aimed to encourage residents to think more consciously about where they spend their money and to recognise the role independent businesses play in sustaining town centres and villages.

The council added that supporting local businesses helps keep money within the district, protects jobs and maintains the distinctive character of Forest of Dean towns.

The winners of the Shop Local competition were Helen Clark, Lizzie Powell, Louise Penny, Sarah Teague, Joshua Robertson and Sarah Parker.
