POLICE yesterday sealed off Northern United to investigate complaints that contractors had destroyed wildlife habitats.

Workmen have been on site for several weeks investigating the old mine workings.

But police moved in on Thursday after complaints that they were not doing enough to protect the rare bats and newts on the site..

An independent expert ecologist visited Hawkwell Green to assess the situation and police were on site between 10am and 5pm.

Sergeant Simon Clemett said: "Specially trained wildlife officers, along with a representative of Natural England, attended to investigate if any offences had been committed contrary to the conservation of species and habitats regulations 2010.

"The alleged destruction of protected species is a very serious matter and it's vitally important we carry out a thorough investigation."

Gloucestershire County Council, which ordered the on site investigations, have yet to comment on whether or not they intend to continue the work pending the outcome of the police inquiry.

An outline planning application has been submitted for a college, road, and commercial units.
