THE HOOF campaign will take to two wheels next Sunday for a brief rally at Cannop Ponds.

Organisers John and Barbara French have made HOOF pennant flags to position at the back of their bikes for any cyclists wanting to take part.

The rally will meet at noon at Pedalbikeaway Cycle Centre in Cannop Valley and circle around the ponds and back.

The brief show of strength against the sell-off of our Forest will coincide with a Mini Downhill racing event at the centre, which starts at 11am.

"This is just a very short cycle ride – but it is to show our united disapproval of the Government's plans for our Forest," said Barbara.

"Cyclists are more at risk of losing their leisure activity in the Forest than walkers if the Public Bodies Bill goes through and the Forest of Dean is sold. Even if free access to the paths is maintained after privatisation it would only be for walkers, not for cyclists or horse riders."

The Wye Valley & Forest of Dean Tourism Association, which has 300 members, unanimously agreed to oppose a sell-off at its last meeting.

Association spokesman John Bosley said any change in ownership "will destroy all that we hold dear about the Forest and will damage the local tourist industry and economy."

He added: "Tourism is probably the most important industry in the area and the Forestry Commission does an excellent job in managing this unique and historic forest for the benefit of both visitors and residents."
