AN occupant of a flat in Lydney was taken to hospital with injuries as crews worked to prevent a large fire from spreading to neighbouring properties last week.

Emergency services were called to an address in Steel Avenue just before 5pm last Tuesday (July 12), having received reports that a blaze had started at a first floor property.

Fire crews, including two fire engines from Lydney and one from Coleford, attended the scene and found that the flat was “well alight”, with the fire at risk of spreading to the neighbouring properties.

A spokesperson from Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service (GFRS) said the “quick action” of the fire crews prevented that from happening, but that the damage to the affected property was “significant”.

Gloucestershire Police said the occupant of the flat was taken to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital with “minor injuries”.

Smoke could be seen bellowing out of the flat from the surrounding streets, and a photo posted online showed flames emanating from a  first floor window.

The police and GFRS said they were working together “to establish the cause of the fire”.
