A 30-year-old Newent man who sexually touched another man and then assaulted a police officer has been handed a suspended jail term by Cheltenham magistrates.

Callam Lumber of Poinsettia Way, Newent, pleaded guilty on May 9th to intentionally touching a male aged over 16 at Gloucester on February 18 last year without reasonably believing that the victim consented.

Lumber also admitted assaulting PC Christopher Iliffe by beating him on the same date.

The defendant received a four week jail term suspended for 15 months for the sexual offence and was ordered to pay the victim £150 compensation.

The magistrates ordered him to register with the police as a sex offender for the next seven years.

For the assault on Pc Iliffe, Lumber was given a 12-week consecutive prison term, also suspended for 15 months, and was ordered to pay the officer £150 compensation.

The magistrates said a prison sentence was justified because of Lumber’s previous convictions.

Lumber was also placed under supervision with a thirty day probation programme requirement and was ordered to pay a £128 victim services surcharge and costs of £85.
