A Cinderford man who was overpaid almost £8,000 in benefits after he failed to tell the council his partner had moved in with him, has been given a 12 month community order.

David Bevan, 48, of Freeminers Way, Cinderford, pleaded guilty to failing to declare a change in his circumstances when he appeared before Magistrates in Gloucester on 25 March.

The court heard Bevan was overpaid £7,714.90 in housing and council tax benefits when he did not let the council know his partner had moved in with him.

Magistrates sentenced Bevan to a 12 month community order with 60 hours of unpaid work and £150 costs.

Caroline Horlick, Revenues and Benefits Manager at the council said: "We were satisfied with this conviction as those who defraud the benefit system are picking the pockets of law-abiding taxpayers.

"The revenues and benefits team is committed to protecting the public purse and ensuring only those who are entitled to housing and council tax benefit receive it."

"If benefits claimants have a change in circumstances they should let us know in writing what has changed and the date the change took place, giving as much detail as possible.

"If you're not sure about something it is far better to contact us to discuss it, rather than leave it and risk prosecution."
