MUCH deserved acclaim has been given to Gordon Sargent as a rugby player, I can assure you he was no slouch with the round ball.
He used to travel up from Lydney to play in the Gloucester Sunday League for Gala.
Not built for football, he was above average for ball skills and heading ability.
He reminded me somewhat of John Charles, the ex-Swansea, Leeds and Hereford player who used his physical presence to win 50/50 challenges to benefit the team.
Lydney Rugby Club can be justifiably proud to be associated with such a fine sportsman, and like Charles he will become a legend in the sport he excelled in.
