Worthing 34
Lydney 26
LYDNEY coach Nick Bartlett says he'll be looking to 'warm the engine up' before this week's home clash with Canterbury.
Bartlett watched his side produce a stuttering first-half performance to trail 28-6.
Lydney stormed back to win the second-half 20-6 after some choice words in the dressing room, but they left themselves with too big a mountain to climb.
Bartlett said: "Worthing took the game to us and we failed to dominate any phase of play in the first-half. I thought we were going to be on the end of a big score because there was no urgency and no intensity at the breakdown or the set pieces."
Brett Turner kicked two first-half penalties for Lydney, who also lost their captain Will Jones with a badly split lip.
The visitors rang the changes in the second-half and it made an immediate difference.
Tony Wicks went to 10, with Josh Hannam switching to the centre.
Will Kane and Stuart Doust came off the bench to play at full-back and on the wing respectively.
Jim McMahon also entered the second-row fray.
Replacement Doust scored two tries for his side, finishing off a team move in the right corner, then collecting a superb cross-field kick from Wicks.
James Bashford was also driven over from an attacking maul.
Turner managed one conversion and a penalty, but McLean denied the visitors a bonus point with a late penalty – giving him 24 points in the match. He scored two of the four Worthing tries as well as kicking impeccably.
Worthing had scrum-half Mike Marsh sent off eight minutes from time for lashing out with the boot.
