LYDNEY took a 37 strong touring party to Canada, comprising 24 players, seven committee members and six supporters.

They played two matches, winning the first and losing the other.

Lydney put up a terrific performance to beat Ontario Blues 33-29. They led 12-8 at half-time and played some entertaining stuff in the second period to maintain that slender advantage.

Provincial side the Blues were taking the match extremely seriously, using it as a selection match for the state team. They fielded a couple of internationals and advised Lydney to field their strongest possible team – even ringing up the RFU beforehand to make sure Lydney were up to playing them.

Against Niagara Wasps, Lydney trailed 26-7 at half-time but scored four second-half tries in a 47-31 defeat.

Club president Derek Pomeroy said: "Beating Ontario was the highlight, let's just say they were not overly pleased to lose. We played very well in that game and our rolling mauls worked very well.

"The game with Niagara Wasps was played in an alcoholic mist but it was classic Lydney, we fell behind then came back strongly.

"Niagara had some good young athletes, but a few more minutes and I think we would have won."
