DOG owners across the Forest of Dean are being encouraged to pull on their walking boots this winter as Forestry England marks Walk Your Dog Month by highlighting some of the area’s best dog-friendly forest trails.

While January can tempt many people to stay indoors, Forestry England says regular walks are vital for a dog’s physical and mental wellbeing and the Forest of Dean offers the perfect setting, with miles of varied paths, handy car parks and welcoming dog-friendly cafés along the way.

Among the recommended routes is Beechenhurst, home to the Glade Trail, a 0.62-mile all-ability route suitable for wheelchairs, pushchairs and off-road mobility scooters. Waymarked in teal, the trail winds through mixed woodland and finishes close to a dog-friendly café.

Also at Beechenhurst is the popular Sculpture Trail, a 4.8-mile circular walk featuring artworks inspired by the forest’s wildlife, trees and industrial past, with shortcuts available for those wanting a shorter route.

Mallards Pike is another firm favourite with dog walkers. The half-mile lakeside path is fully surfaced and dotted with benches, making it ideal for a relaxed stroll, while the longer 10km running trail offers a quieter option for those keen to explore more remote woodland. Walkers are advised that parts of the route are shared with cyclists and horse riders.

For dramatic views, Symonds Yat Rock offers a 1.2-mile woodland trail leading to one of the country’s most famous viewpoints, while the Mailscot Wood Trail provides a more challenging four-mile walk with panoramic views of the River Wye and a well-earned stop at the log cabin café.

Forestry England is reminding visitors to follow the forest dog code, including cleaning up after dogs, taking care near water and respecting wildlife. Full details of walking routes can be found on the Forestry England website.
