Canterbury 55
Lydney 5
JEKYLL and Hyde Lydney were blown away by a rampant Canterbury side, conceding eight tries in Kent.
Canterbury, battling to stay up, clearly targeted Lydney as someone they could beat, offering free admission to try and boost the size of their crowd.
Home winger Michael Melford scored the first of his three tries within seven minutes, chipping ahead and winning the race to the line.
William Hilton, starting his first game at full back, landed the first of his six conversions in a man of the match display.
Lydney lock James Bashford was honest enough to accept that the Severnsiders had let themselves down.
He said: "The fact that someone targets you as a team they can beat should be enough of an incentive to prove them wrong.
"It was a similar story at Shelford.
"I'm not sure where we lost it, but it wasn't just down to one thing. We prepared well and it was pretty much the same team as last week.
"Our tackling was weak and I also thought our heads went down after they scored a couple of tries, which is unusual for a Lydney side. We seemed to give up a bit."
Melford went over again in the 31st minute, but Lydney took advantage of a yellow card to Canterbury's George Micans – Charlie Vine crossing for a try.
That was as good as it got for the visitors.
Despite only trailing 17-5 at the turnaround, Lydney fell apart.
Canterbury lost Chris Hinkins to the sin-bin, but still managed to run in second half scores through Nick Dangerfield, Wim Baars, Alex Veale, Andrew Pratt and Pete Kelly.
The final four tries came in the last 20 minutes.
