A PUB in Newnham on Severn has transformed into a vital community hub, offering a safe and welcoming space where local residents can come together, build friendships, and combat social isolation.
With rural services in the area disappearing and limited transport links to nearby towns, the venue has become an essential gathering place for the village.
The George, a vibrant mixed-use venue in the heart of the Forest of Dean, is run by a team of dedicated volunteers from the Newnham on Severn Community Benefit Society.
Their hard work and commitment have turned the space into much more than a pub; it is now a thriving hub that also hosts social events, educational workshops, and creative activities, enriching the local community and providing a much-needed resource.
The George offers a diverse range of activities aimed at bringing the community together. These include live music performances showcasing local talent, thought-provoking art exhibitions by regional artists, and hands-on workshops where people of all ages can learn new skills.
The venue also runs free monthly talks on various topics, offering a platform for education, discussion, and connection within the village.
Support from the not-for-profit organisation Pub is The Hub has been crucial in helping the venue expand its offerings. Through a grant from the organisation Community Services Fund, The George was able to purchase a projector, screen, and laptop, all of which are already being put to good use for the monthly talks and workshops.
Nick Assirati, a member of the Community Benefit Society, explained: “We have built a village hub in an attempt to combat loneliness and to help build social cohesion. We provide an inclusive, convivial space for interaction, education, or maybe just an inexpensive cup of tea and a warm welcome.” This ethos of inclusivity is at the heart of The George’s mission, making it a place where all are welcome, regardless of age or background.
The George, which also features a gallery, second-hand shop, and café, has been the result of a long-term community project. After a five-year campaign, the premises were purchased as a community asset in October 2022 and officially opened in June 2023.
The venue has also become a platform for local talent to be showcased. Workshops and performances, from art shows to musical events, celebrate the village’s creative spirit.
Pub is The Hub regional advisor Roger Belle commended the initiative, saying: “This is a fantastic venue that has really engaged and connected with people in the local community. The talks and events are having a real impact in helping to bring people together and adding social value to this small rural village.”
The George is now looking to further its mission by hiring a paid part-time manager to oversee operations. This new role will be key in ensuring the venue remains a thriving, well-run hub that continues to serve the community’s needs.
