FOREST of Dean MP Matt Bishop has praised Yorkley and Parkend Primary Schools following a visit last week, highlighting the positive learning environments, strong values and confidence shown by pupils across both sites.
The schools are part of The Forest of Dean Community Schools Federation and work closely together under executive headteacher Mrs K. Burke, with a shared focus on strengthening the local community and delivering high-quality education.
During the visit, Mr Bishop toured classrooms and outdoor learning spaces, speaking directly with pupils about their experiences at school.
Conversations covered topics including outdoor learning, online safety, shared values and sustainability, giving the MP an insight into how learning is shaped across the federation.
At Parkend Primary School, Mr Bishop was led on part of the tour by the school’s Young Leaders. Pupils asked and answered questions during the visit, sharing their views and explaining aspects of school life, including projects focused on energy saving and environmental responsibility.
Yorkley Primary School, which has around 170 pupils, is rated ‘Good’ overall by Ofsted, with three areas judged ‘Outstanding’. The school is known for its inclusive ethos, bespoke curriculum and focus on ensuring pupils feel happy, confident and motivated to learn.
Parkend Primary School, with around 70 pupils on roll, is also rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted, with two ‘Outstanding’ areas. Set in the heart of the Forest of Dean, it places a strong emphasis on outdoor learning, supported by facilities such as a Forest Classroom, Trim Trail, PlayPod and a whole-school biking initiative.
Mr Bishop said the hard work, commitment and care shown by staff was clear, adding that pupils were not only engaged in lessons but genuinely enjoying the learning process.
He thanked Mrs Burke, staff and pupils for welcoming him and said he hoped to return again in the future.
