A hot dry summer had threatened the highlight of the year for a farmers’ society, but last minute August rainfall saved the day.

Llangattock-vibon-avel and District Ploughing and Agricultural Society’s annual ploughing match went ahead at Blue Door Farm, courtesy of the Bosanquet family and NL and GH Land.

Adding to the event was a range of Homecraft competitions, live events, sheep competitions and a dog show.

Jon Cole of Whitchurch was crowned champion ploughman taking home the Ron Williams Trophy as well as the Bill Wood Trophy and the Lettravane Cup.

Local man Daril Evans, crowned Welsh Champion only the day before at Pembrokeshire won the Llangattock Trophy for best turned out vintage tractor and plough.

Bryan Baylis won the Phil Bowen Memorial Cup, Matthew Rowlands won the new class, novice conventional and 15-year-old first-timer Brandon Jones won the Trellech Farmers Trophy for youngest competitor.

Horse Ploughing General Purpose went to Gwyn Bradley who had the Wellington Tray with Derek Hilton taking the Basil Williams cup for best working horse team.

The YFC Argus cup went to Charlie Malsom, Jack Price won the Harding Rolls Cup for U26 vintage ploughing and Sam Jones won the Brian Coles Cup.

Jeff Preece and family trophy went to Al Cartright. The Gordon Sutton Shield went to Alan Davies. Dave Bryant won the Ferguson Trophy, the IDFS trophy went to Dan Cornish.

In the Homecraft Section, Margaret Sammans won the Sheelagh Wyke Rose Bowl, Probert Family Salver went to Diane Pardoe, the Ivy Edwards Cup went to Jessie Edwards. The Morgan Trophy went to David Cornfield. The Walter Blake Cup went to Claire Matthews.

In the children’s section, the St Dials Cup (under 5) went to Connie Duthie, The Olive Barrell cup went to Theodora Tyler and the Ronnie Ruck Trophy went to Ben Brading, Laura Denne won the Beryl Jones Cup and the Mary Bowen Cup.
