WHILE it is always very sad when someone dies or is seriously injured in a road accident, I strongly disagree with the coroner's call for a safety review of the A48 at Minsterworth.

As the inquest revealed, Mr Trattles was driving considerably in excess of the legal limit and as the inquest also stated, the four lost lives in the past three years on this stretch of road resulted from either excessive speed or driver error.

Why should public money be wasted on a review and the introduction of additional safety measures that will continue to be ignored by irresponsible drivers? The speed limit is there for a reason: it is a limit to drive safely within and not a target to be exceeded or, if you do, accept the consequences which may be yours or some innocent victim's death or serious injury. As I was taught by the IAM, drive defensively, think ahead and be alert to the road/weather conditions/limits and the actions of other drivers.
