RESDENTS in Highnam are being invited to have their say on plans for a major new solar farm that could power up to 18,000 homes.

Renewable energy company Voltis has announced proposals for a 36-megawatt solar farm at Highnam Farm, east of Two Mile Lane. The development would generate clean, renewable energy for the next 45 years before the site is fully restored at the end of its operational life.

Voltis says the project is part of its mission to help communities move towards a greener, more sustainable future while contributing to national carbon reduction goals.

The proposed site was selected for its proximity to an existing substation, allowing electricity to be connected to the national grid via underground cables to reduce visual impact.

The company says the design has been reworked following earlier feedback from local residents, with solar panels moved further away from sensitive heritage sites such as the Grade II-listed Beauchamp Lodge.

A spokesperson for Voltis said: “We want to make sure this project works for everyone, generating clean energy while protecting Highnam’s heritage and supporting the local environment. Our aim is to create a solar farm the community can be proud of, one that delivers real and lasting benefits for local people.”

As part of the plans, Voltis is proposing a Community Benefit Fund to support local initiatives, which could include environmental improvements, cost-of-living support, and funding for green education and heritage projects.

The development would also include new hedgerows, wildflower planting, and tree buffers.

An in-person consultation event will take place on Thursday, December 4, from 3:30PM to 7:00PM at Highnam Community Centre.

The public consultation is open until Sunday, December 8, and residents can respond online at solarenergyforhighnam.co.uk, by email at [email protected], or by phone on 0333 358 0502.
