CINDERFORD has welcomed the fastest vicar on two wheels.

Harley-riding reverend Mike Barnsley has joined the Benefice of Cinderford with Littledean, having moved from his post as a curate in Biddulph, Staffordshire.

The father-of-three was given a warm welcome at his institution and induction at St Stephen's Church on Friday which was attended by the Bishop of Tewkesbury the Right Rev John Went.

Mike, a former IT consultant, said he was both daunted and excited to be taking up his responsibilities in the Dean.

"When searching for a post, I was looking for somewhere with a real sense of community," he said.

"It feels right here, and each of the churches have quite different traditions which will be a challenge.

"I'm very eager to get involved and play a part in the community, both as an individual and as a member of the church.

"I grew up on the verge of Cannock Chase so it's also nice having the Forest within reach to go out walking."

Mike will be the new vicar for St Stephen's and St John's churches in Cinderford and St Ethelbert's in Littledean.

He will also be responsible for St Michael's in Soudley and the Bilson Mission.

The 54-year-old previously worked all over the world as an IT consultant, including a five-year stint in the United States where he bought his heavily customised Harley Davidson Road King Bike.

"I've always been involved with the church – my parents were Methodists but I later joined the Church of England," he said.

"I reached a point in my life when I felt that is what I should be doing full-time.

"It was quite a dramatic change – not least financially – but I've no doubts about my choice.

"I've never looked back."
