A GLOUCESTERSHIRE student has been selected to represent the Cayman Islands for the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The 20-year-old University of Gloucestershire student Jahziah Johnson, who studies BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Sciences, will face Antigua and Barbuda, Cuba, Bermuda, and Honduras.

Jahzia plays in midfield and will kick off the qualifiers against Bermuda on Wednesday, June 4. His international side currently sit in third place in Concacaf Group A after two matches.

Jahzia Johnson said: “It means a lot to be called up to the national team. I’m just grateful for the opportunity. My degree has definitely helped me, especially with things like fitness, recovery and understanding how to get the best out of myself as an athlete.

“I’m thankful to the university staff for supporting me throughout my time here. Their encouragement has made a big difference.”

Daniel Cowen, Academic Course Leader for Sport and Exercise Sciences, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled that Jahziah has been selected to represent the Cayman Islands in their upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches.

“Jahziah’s family have shared how proud they are of him, and the University community joins in celebrating this superb moment.

“For an athlete to be chosen to play for their country is a very special honour and we wish Jahziah and his team-mates every success in their forthcoming fixtures.

“His selection is a strong example of our commitment to supporting students to pursue success in both their academic and sporting careers.”

The next World Cup will return to being played in the traditional period, following the temporary changes caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

It will last between the months of June and July. The World Cup final date has been set as Sunday, July 19, with the opening match due to take place on Thursday, June 11.
