THE director of one of the Forest of Dean’s most iconic hotels has praised the region’s business spirit after being invited to Downing Street to celebrate St George’s Day.
Naomi Hands, director of the Speech House Hotel in Coleford, attended the Best of British reception at Number 10 after being invited by Labour MP Matt Bishop.
The event, held to mark England’s national day, brought together business leaders from across the country and featured a keynote speech by Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Ms Hands was selected to represent the Speech House and her previous work as a director of the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley Tourism Association.
She said it was “an honour” to fly the flag for the local tourism and hospitality sector: “It was incredible to see the diversity and innovation within the British business community, and to have the opportunity to represent the Forest of Dean at the highest level.”
Before heading to the evening reception at Downing Street, Naomi took the opportunity to explore Westminster, participating in a guided tour of the historic area.
Speaking after the event, she reflected on the struggles currently facing small businesses like the Speech House, which employs over 70 local staff.
“Times are really tough for small business owners all over the country, especially in tourism and hospitality,” she said: “We want to continue offering our staff stability, work toward net zero to protect the 20 million trees around us, and give back to the community as gatekeepers of one of the area’s most iconic buildings.”
She added: “Having the chance to reflect on what makes Britain ‘great’, it’s the Small and Medium-sized Enterprise’s that work tirelessly to provide services, goods, and employment. They are the backbone of the UK economy.”
