A 21-year-old Worrall man has been banned from driving for three years after he was caught at the wheel while over the alcohol limit.
Finlay Thomson, of Chapel House, Worrall Hill, also did not have third party insurance for his Peugeot 206 at the time of the offence - and he was also found to be in possession of cocaine.
He pleaded guilty at Cheltenham Magistrates Court to driving on Belle Vue Road, Ruardean on 8th July this year with 40mcgs of alcohol on his breath - above the legal limit of 35mcgs. He also admitted the cocaine and insurance offences.
The magistrates disqualified him from driving for three years, fined him £500 and ordered him to pay £85 costs and a £200 surcharge. They ordered confiscation and destruction of the cocaine.
He was told that if he completes a government-approved driving course by 3rd October 2028 his disqualification will be shortened by 36 weeks.
Why do we report court stories?
The public has a right to know what happens in court, and reporting helps to ensure that justice is done transparently, open to scrutiny and can be held to account. This principle is known as open justice.
Our journalists act as independent witnesses on behalf of the public. They explain proceedings that can otherwise feel technical, overwhelming or inaccessible, helping people understand what was decided and why.
Without court reporting, justice would take place behind closed doors.
Regulation supports, rather than undermines, public interest journalism by setting clear boundaries. We are regulated by IPSO and we must follow the Editors’ Code of Practice, which sets clear standards for accuracy, fairness and sensitivity.
Identifying defendants is part of open justice. Where possible, naming defendants ensures accountability, avoids secret justice, and allows the public to distinguish between allegations, acquittals and convictions.
It also helps prevent mistaken identity and rumour, which is also the case for identifying addresses of defendants.
