A PROACTIVE move to safeguard the future of the Snigs End Conservation Area has seen the Forest of Dean District Council successfully nominate the site for inclusion on Historic England’s 2025 Heritage at Risk Register.
Located within the parishes of Staunton and Corse, Snigs End has been recognised for its distinctive rural heritage and historical links to the Chartist movement.
A detailed review commissioned by the council’s Local Planning Authority identified several concerns affecting the area’s traditional character, including the condition of buildings, alterations to original Chartist plots, and the loss of period features.
Following these findings, the council put forward Snigs End for inclusion on the national register earlier this year, a move that Historic England has now approved.
Councillor Adrian Birch, leader and cabinet member for strategy and built environment, said: “We understand that residents care deeply about Snigs End’s heritage. Being added to the Heritage at Risk Register is a way of unlocking expert support and resources to ensure this special area is conserved for future generations.”
Councillor Jackie Dale, cabinet member for thriving communities, added: “The council is committed to working closely with residents and the local community to shape the next steps for Snigs End. Future plans include opportunities for local engagement and collaboration on conservation priorities.”
Inclusion on the Heritage at Risk Register is not a sign of neglect but an opportunity to draw in specialist advice, partnerships and potential funding to help preserve important historic sites.
The register provides an annual overview of the condition of England’s heritage assets and helps ensure they can continue to be protected and enjoyed for years to come.
