CHILDREN at Primrose Hill and St John’s Primary Schools in the Forest of Dean have taken part in a nationwide musical project that could see them enter the record books.
The pupils were among hundreds of primary school children across the UK to contribute to the Community Song, a unique initiative run by SMASH HIT Songwriting School.
The project gives young learners the chance to write an original song together, with the ambitious goal of setting a world record for the most songwriters involved in a single piece of music.
Throughout this term, the children submitted lyrics, melodies, and musical ideas remotely, which were then combined by music teacher Alex Vass into one cohesive track.
Over 70 pupils contributed from the Forest of Dean alone, each seeing their work included in the final song.
Mr Vass said: “This isn’t just about breaking a record, it’s about giving children a voice. When young people come together to create something, the result is honest, powerful, and completely unique. That’s what makes this project so special.”
The finished song, Hello Spring (It's Time to Come Alive), was released on all major streaming platforms on Friday, April 3, accompanied by a music video featuring the young songwriters.
While organisers are still awaiting official confirmation from Guinness World Records, every child who contributed has their songwriting efforts formally credited, making them part of what could be a historic moment in UK music education.
SMASH HIT Songwriting School, founded in 2024 by company director Oscar Wenman-Hyde, is the UK’s only primary music programme that combines songwriting, instrument skills, and creative expression.
Schools across the Forest of Dean and the wider UK are now being invited to partner with SMASH HIT for future projects.
The Community Song can be listened to on the SMASH HIT Songwriting School YouTube channel.
