A SCHEME for a new supermarket in Cinderford is back on the agenda after plans for a store on Steam Mills Road were resubmitted.
Planning permission has been granted on several occasions by Forest of Dean District Council, but on each occasion High Court judges have ruled that the Asda and Tesco developments could not go ahead following appeals by Midcounties Co-operative.
The original plans was for an Asda supermarket on the site off Valley Road have been in the pipeline for years following on from the Tesco scheme. The latest resubmission does not yet have a supermarket chain linked to it.
The High Court appeals were successful on the basis that the store is based ’out of town’ and therefore contravenes one of the district council’s main policies.
The company behind the application, Trilogy Developments (Beverley) Ltd have taken on the reigns from the liquidated Trilogy Developments (Cinderford) Ltd, which had to bear the brunt of the legal costs.
The plans have received overwhelming support from the Cinderford Regeneration Board, whose chairman Graham Morgan said: “There is no suitably sized alternative site available within the town centre boundary, making this application a departure from the District Council’s policies.”
