LYDNEY pizza lovers may miss out on a Domino’s Pizza store in the town despite plans for one being approved almost a year ago.

A spokesperson for the takeaway giants was unable to commit to the proposed restaurant at Hylton Court on Newerne Street, which was granted planning permission last March.

Aside from minor tweaks to the plans, there has been no progress in the scheme while permission was even granted for Domino’s to erect signage on the building.

In the same month, a Domino’s takeaway in Ross-on-Wye was granted planning permission. It opened in the town at the end of last year on Gloucester Road.

But the spokesperson insisted the firm are still interested in coming to the Forest.

“We’re keen to bring Domino’s to Lydney and we’re currently exploring a number of sites in the area,” said Nina Arnott, head of communications.

But when pressed further, Ms Arnott said there was ’nothing further we wish to add at this stage’m despite the original statement raising more questions than answers.

District councillor Bill Osborne originally raised concerns over Domino’s potential arrival in Lydney, fearing it may impact on smaller takeaway stores in the Severnside town.

“We’re known as the takeaway capital of the Forest already in Lydney,” he said.

“It’s possible that another empty shop could be filled but how long for? It’s a difficult one because if we fill that one shop we might find three more empty.

“One advantage this one has is that there’s off-road parking for its customers. But I do fear that it would close down some of the smaller businesses.”
