I, AND many others, deplore the despicable and venomous attack on the character of Peter Amos, leader of the Forest of Dean District Council which has persistently taken place recently.

The punishment far outweighs the so-called crime of granting an interview to the Press on the day of the delegation to the House of Lords regarding our deep concern on the whole issue of the future of our Forest.

As leader of the council, Peter Amos quite rightly did his duty and spoke on behalf of us all, with one voice, in full support of the aims and objectives of the delegation.

I hope this unjustified attack will be seen for what it really is, a poor and desperate attempt to undermine and divert attention from all the good work which has been done under this leadership, not least of all turning this council from one which was labelled "failing" by the government inspectors of the Audit Commission – and one which was in danger of going into Special Measures – into a council which can hold its head up high.

As the district elections draw near we are witnessing electioneering of the most vicious kind. The definition of integrity is moral uprightness, honesty, wholeness and soundness: the interpretation of integrity should be looked at in this light.

Coun Diana Edwards

Deputy Leader
