MARK Harper MP recently cast doubt on the suitability of AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) status for the Forest of Dean.

However, a leading authority on the subject believes the MP's views are not supported by the facts.

Professor Laurence Moseley from Cinderford, who is the research officer for Friends of the Forest, says that since 2000 there have been 25 reports on the economic effects of having a protected status like AONB.

The professor claims all 25 reports have indicated that having AONB status has positive effects, to the value of millions of pounds.
