GLOUCESTERSHIRE police are being investigated after a man died while in custody after being arrested in Lower Lydbrook.

The man, in his 50s, was driving a Black Range Rover and arrested by police near the Stowfeld Park Business Park, the site of the old cable works.

Following the incident, the Independent Police Complaints Commission was called in to investigate.

There was a heavy police presence in the area on Wednesday night and through the weekend as officers cleared the grass verges with strimmers and then scoured the grass in search of evidence.

A spokesman said: “The IPCC is continuing its investigation into the death of a man in police custody on Thursday, June 23.

“It has so far been established that Gloucestershire police went to the Stowfield Business Park at around 11pm on Wednesday 22 June, following a call from members of staff who had come into contact with the man after he got out of a black Range Rover Sport.

“The man was detained by police upon their arrival, however his condition deteriorated and an ambulance was called. He was declared dead at the scene just after midnight.

“The results of a post mortem held Thursday 23 June were inconclusive, and we are awaiting the outcome of further tests.”

The release of the man’s identity awaits the opening of the inquest.
