RESIDENTS have been reassured there are no forest fires in the Forest of Dean after a strong smell of smoke was reported across the area today (Sunday, August 9).

Forest of Dean MP Matt Bishop said he had contacted the fire service after concerns were raised by residents amid the continuing dry conditions.

Mr Bishop said the fire brigade had confirmed there were currently no forest fires in the Forest of Dean and that the smoke affecting the district was understood to be coming from a fire in Wales.

He said: “I’m pleased to have that reassurance and pass this information onto you.

“I know how concerning this can be, particularly given the dry conditions, and I will continue to keep an eye on the situation and share any further information as it becomes available.”

Residents have been urged to only contact the emergency services if they see a fire or believe there is an immediate risk to people or property.

Mr Bishop added that fire crews were “extremely busy” and asked people not to contact them simply because of the smell of smoke.

Anyone who sees a fire or believes there is an immediate danger should call 999.
