NEWENT rector Simon Mason says a food collection service set up 18 months ago is helping 10 families a week in the Dean.
And the problem of food shortages for Dean families is growing, said Mr Mason.
He said: "A lot of people find themselves in difficulty. If they become unemployed, they may well not have enough cash for food. They have to choose what they spend their money on.
"If someone has come out of hospital, perhaps a care package isn't in place. If no food is given to them they're not going to survive."
St Mary's has set up The Lord's Larder, a food voucher scheme which works in conjunction with social services, who distribute them when they encounter someone in need.
The church gives vouchers to the various agencies, who distribute
them when they encounter someone in need. That person is then allowed to come to the collection point a maximum of three times, though more might be allowed if social services recommend it.
The food parcels mostly consist of non-perishable goods proving breakfast, lunch and tea for three days.
"They will include a staple, a meat, veg and a pudding, also breakfast cereals," said Simon.
"We cover most of the Forest. If people need food in Cinderford we'll get it to them."
A full list of the collection points is available from St Mary's on 01531 821641.
