WELSH wonder Alex Cuthbert is keeping his feet firmly on the ground ahead of the British and Irish Lions call-ups.

Alex returned to his old school this week – and was warmly welcomed back by the staff and pupils at Newent Community School.

He put a group of Year 10 pupils through their paces in a series of tag rugby games.

Assistant head and fellow Welshman Martin John taught Alex PE before the 23-year-old became the darling of Welsh rugby.

Martin said: "It's always good to see ex-students doing well but as he's playing for Wales that's the icing on the cake for me!"

Steve Edgell, Head of PE, praised Alex's prowess as an athlete.

"Alex still holds about six or seven athletics records here, as does his brother Patrick," he said.

Alex looked relaxed and happy, throwing rugby balls around on his old school playing field.

He said: "It's good to get involved with the kids.

"I don't do a lot for schools in Wales but it's great to come back here and show my appreciation for what Newent did for me.
