BROADWELL youngster Jack Walby took his best finish of the year to date with an excellent 21st overall on last weekend’s Tempest Stages.

Walby had the experienced Karen Jenkins alongside for the first time on the notes as he also secured a second place finish in the Citroen C2 Challenge.

A near 90-car entry assembled for the ten stage event at the Rushmoor Arena near Aldershot with the final two in darkness, held in heavy rain which lasted all day, making stages extremely slippery.

After a solid start, the duo caught a car on the first run through the Longmoor test; the longest stage of the day.

After the first service of the day five more stages lay ahead. A few seconds were lost here with the engine losing power, possibly being caused by the amount of water in the stages.

Just two stages in darkness remained but the pair’s woes continued as they then lost the intercom.

Karen had to resort to shouting and hand signals, but with stages now cutting up, the car started crabbing badly on the final test, but the duo survived.

“Jack drove very well in difficult conditions,” Karen said.

“We had a few problems, and with the bent bottom arm, we were lucky to finish.”

Jack added: “I am really pleased with the result. Thanks to Karen who did a great job, also to Paul, Nige and my dad for keeping us going, as the stages got very rough at the end.”

Ross Leach and Rebecca Goatman continue to dominate the C2 Challenge with yet another victory and 14th overall and first C2 home.

Mark Christopher and Kevin Watkins finished 38th overall and fourth C2, while Mike Truman and Leanne Harris placed 11th in the four wheel drive rally.

They finished tenth in class in the ME Damsell Subaru Impreza.

The overall winners were Rob Swann and Darron Garrod in a brand new Fiesta R5.
